Winn Schwartau begins this brand-new talk with an overview of silicon- and carbon-based technologies that create our sense of reality. (The PivB session on May 9th will be much more technically in-depth.)
With the metaverse, the hybridization of persistent immersive experiences merges human neuroscience and computer networks. We see the beginnings of these extended technologies and applications with VR-AR-XR-MR systems. VR users can currently be profiled, deanonymized, and data harvested. Metaverse platforms carry all the privacy risks of the current internet and more while at present having none of the defensive privacy tools we are accustomed to using on the web.
Metacontent orchestration techniques will likely make PII, Personally Identifiable Information, obsolete, replaced by PIB… and yes, that will be explained, and the company Meta (FB) knows it: “It’s been clear for some years that animated avatars are acting as privacy loss leaders. This data is far more granular and far more personal than an image of a face in the photograph.” -> Meta AI Chief, Don Stark
And what about policy? Should metamurder and metasexual assault be legal? How deep will we let Metasurveillance Capitalism go? Will an increasingly realistic metaverse be more addictive than opioids? And if we don’t deal with social addiction and reality distortion policies now, what are we waiting for?

After the break we’re going to get into some serious discussions about security in the metaverse. We’re going to put on our defensive hats and discuss confidentiality, integrity, and how latency is the new availability. Winn will argue and want to hear from you! Who (Age? Ratings? Banned?) should have access to which metaplaces in the metaverse? Is the promise of global metaverse interoperability a good or a bad thing? Bring your thinking caps, opinions, and let’s starting figuring some of this out. Winn really wants your honest opinions! Honestly.

Winn has lived Cybersecurity since 1983 and says, “I think, maybe, I’m just starting to understand it.” His predictions about the internet & security have been scarily spot on. He coined the term “Electronic Pearl Harbor” while testifying before Congress in 1991. His seminal book, “Information Warfare” showed the world how and why massive identify theft, cyber-espionage, nation-state hacking and cyber-terrorism would be an integral part of the future (today’s present).
Currently he is exploring “Metawar”, a term he coined to describe the 3 classes of conflict in the evolving Metaverse. Increasingly impressive technologies, “active metacontent orchestration”, and powerful feedback systems will create alternate realities, such that at some distant date, the metapoint will be reached, where persistent immersive simulations will be indistinguishable from our default ‘reality’. Even in the short-term, the security, privacy, ethics, and global policy implications of ‘metaversal’ participation are staggering and changing at incredible speeds.
His last book, “Analogue Network Security” is a time-based probabilistic approach to justifiable security. By hybridizing analogue and digital security techniques, he offers methods to “fix security and the internet”, including fake news, spam, phishing, DDoS and more.
